BASIC MATH:

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

 

Understand how to add and subtract fractions 

 

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to define like and unlike fractions
  • Student will understand the concepts of equivalent fractions
  • Students will know how to identify equivalent fractions
  • Student will understand what it takes to add/subtract fractions
  • Students will understand the concepts of common denominator
  • Students will know how to calculate common denominators
  • Students will know how to calculate and define least common denominators

Suggested Grades:

Fourth Grade - Fifth Grade - Sixth Grade

Note: This lesson also may be used by older students seeking business math review, for example, a refresher for those entering an administrative type position.

 
 

 

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS LESSON PLAN

 

Teaching Materials

  • Lesson - Fractions - Adding and Subtracting (see below for printable lesson)

  • Prepared Examples

  • Overhead


Lesson Activity:

  1. Present concept of like fractions
    • Compare like fractions to unlike fractions
  2. Discuss equivalent fractions
    • look at examples
    • use diagrams to illustrate concept
    • ask class to think of like fractions for common relationships (1/2, 1/3, etc…)
  3. Discuss the Fundamental Property of Fractions
    • practice converting fractions using the property
  4. Introduce addition of fractions
    • Explain the need for a common denominator
    • Add the numerators
    • Work through examples with like fractions
  5. Discuss unlike fractions
    • work through lots of examples converting to common denominator and adding numerators
  6. Discuss Least Common Denominator
    • present 1st approach to finding the LCD (list for potential common denominators)
    • present 2nd approach (prime factor approach)
  7. Work through fraction additions and express in lowest terms

 

Assessment/Evaluation
Have students complete the worksheet. A passing grade is 70% or greater.
