AIRFARE COSTS AND DISCOUNTS LESSON PLAN
Everyone loves when the airlines decide to offer their travelers a discount.
Many times these discounts can be calculated using percentages, and sometimes it makes more sense to calculate the discount using a fraction.
What is a fractional discount?
A fractional discount is when a percentage is converted from a percentage to a fraction. We use the fraction to calculate the discount we are looking for.
Let’s look at an Example.
Example: United Airlines has decided to decrease all of their fares by 20% for the holidays. If the cost of a flight from Boston to Tampa used to be $450.00, what is the new price that travelers will pay with the discount?
Let’s work this through as a fractional discount.
First, we need to convert the percentage into a fraction.
