Students learn basic addition & subtraction math skills.

 

 

BASIC MATH:

Addition & Subtraction

 

Understand how to add and subtract numbers using various techniques.

 

Objectives:

  • Students will know basic definitions of the number system

  • Students will know definitions of elements of addition and subtraction

  • Students will be able to add whole numbers

  • Students will be able to subtract whole numbers

Suggested Grades:

Third Grade - Fourth Grade - Fifth Grade - Sixth Grade

 

Note: This lesson also may be used by older students seeking business math review, for example, a refresher for those entering an administrative type position.

 
 

 

ADDITION & SUBTRACTION LESSON PLAN

 

Teaching Materials

  • One copy of text per student

  • Lesson - Basic Math - Addition & Subtraction (see below for printable lesson)

  • Prepared Examples

  • Overhead

Method:
1. Discuss the number system and introduce the definitions of a numeral, digit, whole number, and decimal system. Ask students for examples as you identify a term.

2. Introduce the concept of a place value

3. Work through examples with the class by asking them to identify the digits in particular place values for numerical examples

4. Introduce addition and the terms addend and sum

5. Using prepared examples, show students how to line up place values

6. Discuss the concept of carrying over

7. Using prepared examples, show students how to carry over

8. Introduce subtraction and the terms minuend, subtrahend and difference

9. Work though basic examples with no borrowing

10. Put an equation on the overhead that requires borrowing, ask students for ideas on how to solve

11. Discuss the concept of borrowing and work through prepared examples

12. Pose an equation that has a 0 in a place value that needs to be borrowed from, ask students for ideas how to solve

13. Discuss borrowing across columns and work through prepared examples

Assessment/Evaluation
Have students complete worksheet. A passing grade is 70% or greater.
