Students learn basic money math skills.

 

 

BASIC MATH:

PERCENTS

 

Understand percent and how to calculate percent.

 

Objectives:

  • Students will understand the concepts of our base 10 number system
  • Students will learn the definition of percent
  • Students will understand the concepts of converting fractions to percent
  • Students will know how to convert fractions to percent
  • Students will understand the concepts of converting decimals to percent
  • Students will know how to convert decimals to percent

Suggested Grades:

Sixth Grade - Seventh Grade - Eighth Grade - Secondary Education - High School

Note: This lesson also may be used by older students seeking business math review, for example, a refresher for those entering an administrative type position.

Lesson Activity:

  1. Discuss the base 10 number system
    • ask for examples of base 10 in every day life
    • ask how we would use a base 12 or other base system greater than 10 – what would the implications be?
  2. Introduce Percent
    • discuss relationship to decimals and fractions
    • talk about the scale 100 concept / hundredths
  3. Convert Percents to decimals
    • work through examples
    • go back and forth between the forms
  4. Convert Percents to fractions
    • work through examples
    • go back and forth between the forms
  5. Introduce word problems
    • Discuss drawing diagrams and pictures to help clarify the problem
    • Ask class for everyday examples of percent problems
    • work through lots of examples

Assessment/Evaluation
Have students complete the worksheet. A passing grade is 70% or greater.
