An introduction and lesson for students on the cost of starting and running a business.

 

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • Define fixed costs
  • Define variable costs                                   
  • Identify which costs are fixed and which are variable
  • Calculate total fixed and variable costs
  • Find the variable costs for a single product
  • Understand the concept of break even point
  • Calculate the break even point
  • Use the break even point to help the establish a price for their product

You’ve come up with a few ideas for a business that you would like to start. You’ve looked at the resources that you’ll need and you’ve found a market that your business will fill. So isn’t it time to begin? Hold on now!! You’re moving too fast! You need a bit more information before you set off on your new enterprise. You need to know how much it will all cost so that you can come up with a price that will allow you to make a profit. Profit is the difference between the money you must pay out to run your business and the money that your customers pay for the product or service.
