Is My Business Successful?

 

Students learn how to determine if a business is successful.

 

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • to define the following terms: gross profit, net profit, percent profit.
  • to understand that the success of a business is determined by the net profit.
  • to calculate gross profit, net profit and percent profit when given the income and cost information for a given business.
  • to calculate how changes in the operating variables for a business will effect the net profit.
  • to compare two or more businesses by using the net profits and percent profit to determine which is more successful.

Suggested Grades:

Fifth Grade - Sixth Grade - Seventh Grade - Business Education

Method

Teacher will introduce the topic and go through the first example with students. Students will break into groups to finish the group exercise and when finished will come back together as a full class to discuss their outcomes during a question and answer session.

So you’ve started your business, but how are you really doing? How can you measure if your business is a successful one?

Well, one way would be to count the number of customers that you get each day. If you have twenty customers each day, doesn’t that mean that your business is a success? No, not always. What about the number of items that you sold? Again this is not always a good measure either.

Let’s take a look at Jennifer's refreshing ice cream business to find out how to decided if a business is successful or not.
