Many states in the United States have a sales tax.

How can we calculate a sales tax?
First, we need to think about what a sales tax actually is.
A sales tax is an extra amount of money beyond the original price.
If you think about it this way, a sales tax is the opposite of a discount.

How is a sales tax different from a discount?
A sales tax and a discount have some things in common. They also have some things that are different.

            Both are percentages.
            Both are calculated the same way.
            A discount is subtracted from the original price.
            A sales tax is added to the original price.
