BASIC MATH:

Decimal Fractions Introduction

 

Understanding the basics of Decimal Fractions, including related money transactions.

 

Objectives:

  • Student will understand the concepts of decimal fractions
  • Students will know how to read decimal fractions
  • Students will understand the principles and relationships behind decimal places
  • Students will understand how to round decimal fractions to next highest number
  • Students will understand the role of the decimal place in calculations
  • Students will know how to add and subtract decimal fractions

Suggested Grades:

Fourth Grade - Fifth Grade - Sixth Grade

Note: This lesson also may be used by older students seeking business math review, for example, a refresher for those entering an administrative type position.

 
 

 

DECIMAL FRACTIONS INTRO LESSON PLAN

Lesson Activity:

  1. What is a decimal fraction
    • ask class for examples
    • ask class to explain what a decimal is – many can tell you what a decimal is but they don’t understand what it represents
  2. Place values
    • give class a 7 digit number –ask for the place value of each starting with the largest
    • discuss place values
    • ask what happens when you want to express something that is less than one’s place
    • explain and discuss
  3. Introduce decimal fractions
    • ask class how decimal fractions relate to fractions?
    • explain and discuss
    • Give class a 7 digit decimal fraction
    • Go through the place values
  4. Introduce rounding
    • explain significant digits
    • present rules for rounding
    • work through examples – start with long version
  5. Adding and Subtracting
    • Put two decimal fractions on the board, ask class how they would add them
    • Explain need to line up decimals
    • Work through examples

Assessment/Evaluation
Have students complete the worksheet. A passing grade is 70% or greater.
