DISCOUNTS AND SCALAR MULTIPLICATION LESSON PLAN
What is a discount?
A discount is a percentage off of a price. You work with discounts all the time. You calculate the sale price of an item when you shop at the mall or when you calculate how much money you are saving on several different products.
What is scalar multiplication?
Scalar multiplication is multiplication that involves a matrix. A matrix is a way of organizing data in a set of brackets. Companies often use matrices to look at a display of their annual sales or losses. Other companies can use a matrix to organize pricing. Then they can easily compare how their pricing has changed or hasn’t changed over time.
A matrix doesn’t need to be confusing. The easiest way to think about is as a way to organize data.
Here is an example of a matrix.
