Objectives:

Students will learn about changes to the food pyramid.

 

Students will be able to demonstrate their comprehension skills, including reading strategies, inference, literal meanings, and critical analysis.

 

Suggested Grade Levels:

4th Grade - 5th Grade - 6th Grade - 7th Grade

 

 

 

 

Changes to the Food Pyramid

 

Materials:

 

Procedure:

The following is a non-fiction passage. Use this to test your student’s comprehension strategies.

 

Students should read the following story and then circle the correct answers.

 

 

Lesson excerpt:

According to many health experts, the food pyramid, which is a guideline for Americans on how to eat, is in need of a change. The old pyramid was released in 1992 and, after years of debate and new scientific evidence, is outdated. The new pyramid, experts say, will address health issues such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes, all of which are increasing in America.

 

The old pyramid suggested eating 6-11 breads, rice, and pasta per day – the largest group of foods we should consume per day. It told us to eat many fruits and vegetables (3-5 servings/day) and grouped all types of meat together, as well as dairy at 2-3 servings per day. At the top, or the smallest category, was fats/sweets and oils...
