PREVENTING HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE LESSON PLAN
Resources needed:
- Printable lesson and lesson plan (see below).
- Copies of urgent action case from Amnesty International Kids website (see activity for details)
- Letter-writing stationery and envelopes suitable for mailing abroad
- Dictionary (1 per table if possible)

1 hour 30 minutes (Part A: 30 minutes of teaching, Part B: 1 hour activity)

Part A:
- Remind the class that last time they looked at what human rights mean. Can they remember some examples of rights and how these are abused? Explain that in this lesson, we’re going to look at what can be done to stop human rights abuses.
- Ask the class if they know what campaigning means and how it’s done
Campaigning means carrying out activities to bring an issue to the public’s attention or to persuade governments at home or overseas to change their policies. This could be to help a person or group, or for the good of everyone. Campaign activities could include:
- Researching and investigating so the group has all the latest information on the issue
- Writing letters or emails to politicians asking them to change the law
- Asking people to sign petitions and sending them to politicians
