An introduction and lesson for students on basic marketing strategy and understanding a target market.

 

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • Identify which types of products could appeal to which group of people
  • Understand that knowing the target market for a particular product or service is vital when it comes time to sell it
  • Understand what a marketing strategy is
  • Develop a marketing strategy for a product or service once the target market is known
  • Understand how pricing affects the marketing strategy for a product or service

Method

Teacher will introduce topic and new terms and allow students to work independently or in groups on the various exercises, coming back together as a class to discuss what they’ve done.

Excerpt from Lesson:

In an earlier lesson we learned that your market is the people who you expect will be buying your product or paying for your service. In any place you will see all types of people each with their specific needs and wants. You certainly can’t be expected to meet everybody’s needs- that would be impossible! Look at your school. You have the students, the teachers, the lunchroom staff, the janitors, the school nurse, the principal. Each of these people has very different needs. The specific group of people that you want to sell to is called your target market.
