Procedure:
1. Warm-up: Review adding and subtracting decimals. Ask students how to write 50 cents in dollar form.
2. Motivate the Lesson: Place quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies in the front of the classroom. Ask students to identify the value of each coin. Ask students to count the number of coins. Ask students how they could calculate the total value of the stack of coins.
3. Proceed through the lesson with the “Question of the Day”. Explain that they will need to use their math skills to be successful piggy bank detectives.
4. Verify students can add and subtract decimal numbers accurately by verbally quizzing them on the practice questions. *Critical Thinking: Ask students if there is a faster way to calculate the amount of money besides adding. (i.e.: Multiplying)

Value of Money Lesson *
Lesson
excerpt - You had been saving your weekly allowance in a piggy bank. When you returned home from school one day you were surprised to find that your piggy bank had been broken into several pieces. Luckily, you had been keeping track of how much money you put into the piggy bank each week. You knew there should be a total of $2.75 in the piggy bank.
