Goals
Whether students will be writing
a practice résumé or one they
will use to apply for jobs, this
lesson will help students:
Duration
One or two sessions.
Objectives
Keeping their job target in
mind, students will list
relevant coursework, part-time
work, volunteer positions, and
extracurricular activities. If
they are not sure if a class or
position is relevant, have them
add it to the list for later
review.
Procedure
Begin by choosing a common job
target that is familiar such as
a retail sales position or
restaurant wait service, as most
students are familiar with the
general aspects of the job. Have
students discuss which courses
are applicable to the chosen
position and which are not. Do
the same for extracurricular
activities. For example,
coursework in mathematics is
relevant for a sales position
because the job requires working
with money and numbers.
Coursework keyboarding may not
be as relevant (but would be for
an administrative support
position).
Do the same for extracurricular
activities and after school
programs. Only relevant
activities should be listed,
unless the student’s involvement
includes leadership or teamwork
activities. In these cases, the
activities should be listed to
demonstrate the student’s
ability to take on extra
responsibility or to work well
with others in a group setting.
Again, help students to
determine which activities are
relevant and which are not.
Having students work in small
groups will also foster
discussion to help students
decide which activities they
should list. Involvement in the
drama club, for example, may be
useful for someone applying for
a position working with
children, but may not be useful
for someone applying for an
office position.
Students may work individually
or in small groups.
Assessment
Assist students as needed. Have
students keep the worksheets to
use later when writing the
résumé.
