What does it mean to have a sale? Verify that students understand the definition of the word “discount”. Ask students if they know the definition of sales tax. What is the current sales tax in their state?

3. Proceed through the lesson with the “Question of the Day”. Explain that they are solving real world problems today. Encourage students to apply this knowledge the next time they go to the store.

4. Verify that students understand the definitions of the amount of discount, sale price, sales tax, and total cost. Students tend to confuse these definitions. Have each student write the definitions in their notes for future reference.
