STOCK MARKET AND RATIONAL NUMBERS LESSON PLAN
Teaching Materials
Lesson Excerpt:
There are many ways that math and real life work together. The stock market and rational numbers are one of those ways.
What is the stock market?
The stock market is an actual market where people can buy, sell or trade an investment in a company. This investment is known as stock. For example, let’s say that you are interested in supporting a company like Verizon. If you have the money, you can purchase a share in this company. If the company does well, then the value of your share increases. If the company does poorly, then the value of your share decreases.
We call these shares “stock”. It is a good thing to own stock. Some people spend many hours “following” the stock market. They do this because they are trying to figure out which companies are going to do well and which ones aren’t. If they think a company is going to do well then they purchase stock in the company. If they think that a company is not going to do well, then they sell their shares in the company so that they don’t lose any money.
It can be a complicated process. The important thing is for you to have a general idea of what the stock market is and how it works so that we can see how rational numbers feature into the stock market.
