Pennsylvania has dedicated programs for older adults including one of the best state prescription drug assistance programs in the country. If you are 65 or older and on a limited income, several programs may be able to help.
Food Assistance Programs
Pennsylvania seniors can get help with food costs through federal SNAP benefits and a large food bank network.
- SNAP Food Assistance
Monthly food benefits on an EBT card. Apply through your county assistance office or at compass.state.pa.us. Seniors 60+ often qualify under more generous income rules.
- Local Food Banks and Pantries
Free groceries through Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Philabundance, and other PA food banks. No income documentation required at most locations.
Medical Cost Assistance
Pennsylvania offers federal Medicare assistance and one of the strongest state prescription drug programs in the country.

Reduces Medicare Part D drug costs significantly. Apply through Social Security — online, by phone, or in person.
- PACE / PACENET — Prescription Assistance
Pennsylvania's Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly helps seniors 65+ pay for prescriptions. PACE serves lower-income seniors; PACENET extends help to higher-income households. Co-pays as low as $6–$9 per prescription. Apply through the PA Department of Aging.

Pennsylvania's Medicaid program can pay your Medicare Part B premium and reduce cost-sharing if your income qualifies.

Energy Bill Assistance
Pennsylvania has several programs to help seniors with heating bills and utility costs.
- LIHEAP Energy Assistance
Federal heating assistance. Pennsylvania is a cold-weather state and LIHEAP can provide meaningful help with winter heating bills. Seniors receive priority. Apply through your county assistance office.
- Utility Company Assistance Programs
PECO, PPL, Columbia Gas, and other PA utilities offer low-income discount and bill forgiveness programs. Contact your utility company to ask what is available.
Property Tax Relief
Pennsylvania offers a Property Tax/Rent Rebate program specifically for older and disabled residents.

Pennsylvania homeowners 65+ may qualify for county and township property tax exemptions in addition to the state rebate program.

Transportation Programs
Pennsylvania seniors can access free or reduced-cost transportation through local aging agencies and transit programs.
