Social Security does not pay everyone on the same day. Which day you are paid depends on which program you receive, when you started receiving benefits, and — for most people — the day of the month you were born. This page puts every 2026 payment date in one table, explains the four payment groups, and covers the two things that cause the most confusion every year: months with two SSI deposits and months with none.

The Four Social Security Payment Groups
The Social Security Administration sorts beneficiaries into four groups. Find yours once and the rest of the year follows the same pattern.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI): paid on the 1st of the month.
- Social Security if you started receiving benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI: paid on the 3rd of the month.
- Everyone else, birth date on the 1st through the 10th: paid on the second Wednesday.
- Birth date on the 11th through the 20th: paid on the third Wednesday.
- Birth date on the 21st through the 31st: paid on the fourth Wednesday.
For the Wednesday groups, the birth date that counts is the one belonging to the worker whose earnings record the benefit is paid on. A spouse or survivor receiving benefits on someone else’s record is paid according to that person’s birthday, not their own.
The weekend and holiday rule: when a scheduled date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the payment is sent on the business day before it. That single rule explains every irregular date in the table below.

Five months in 2026 have an SSI payment that arrives early because the 1st lands on a weekend or holiday (January, February, March, August, and November), four months move the 3rd-of-the-month group (January, May, July, and October), and one Wednesday payment moves to a Tuesday because of Veterans Day (November 10).
Month-by-Month Notes
- January: Jan. 1 is a federal holiday, so January’s SSI arrived Dec. 31; Jan. 3 is a Saturday, so the 3rd-of-the-month group is paid Jan. 2. The February SSI payment arrives Friday, Jan. 30.
- February: Feb. 1 is a Sunday, so February’s SSI arrived Jan. 30. The March SSI payment arrives Friday, Feb. 27.
- March: Mar. 1 is a Sunday, so March’s SSI arrived Feb. 27 — there is no SSI deposit dated in March.
- April: A regular month.
- May: May 3 is a Sunday, so the 3rd-of-the-month group is paid Friday, May 1 — the same day as SSI.
- June: A regular month.
- July: Independence Day is observed Friday, July 3, so the 3rd-of-the-month group is paid July 2. The August SSI payment arrives Friday, July 31.
- August: Aug. 1 is a Saturday, so August’s SSI arrived July 31 — there is no SSI deposit dated in August.
- September: A regular month.
- October: Oct. 3 is a Saturday, so the 3rd-of-the-month group is paid Oct. 2. The November SSI payment arrives Friday, Oct. 30.
- November: Nov. 1 is a Sunday, so November’s SSI arrived Oct. 30. Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11, so the birth-date 1st–10th group is paid Tuesday, Nov. 10.
- December: SSA’s calendar also marks Thursday, Dec. 31: that is the January 2027 payment for the 3rd-of-the-month group, because Jan. 3, 2027 is a Sunday and Jan. 1 is a holiday.
Why You Might See Two SSI Deposits in One Month — or None
SSI is the group this catches most often. When the 1st of a month falls on a weekend or holiday, that month’s payment arrives on the last business day of the month before. On a bank statement that looks like a bonus payment or a double check. It is neither: it is the next month’s money arriving a day or two early, and the following month will show no SSI deposit at all.
In 2026 this happens in July (payments on July 1 and July 31, then nothing dated in August) and again in October (October 1 and October 30, then nothing dated in November). January and February each show one deposit near the end of the month that belongs to the following month, and March shows none. Budget the early deposit as next month’s money, and the gap month takes care of itself.
People who receive both Social Security and SSI can see two deposits a few days apart for a different reason: SSI on or before the 1st and Social Security on the 3rd are payments from two separate programs, not a duplicate.
What the 2026 COLA Changed
Benefits rose 2.8 percent for 2026 under the annual cost-of-living adjustment. For Social Security the increase began with January 2026 payments; for SSI it began with the payment sent December 31, 2025, which is January’s SSI arriving early under the holiday rule. The 2027 adjustment is announced each October and takes effect the following January.
If you work while collecting before full retirement age, the 2026 earnings limit is $24,480, and $65,160 in the year you reach full retirement age. If Your Payment Does Not Arrive on the Scheduled Date
- Check the table first. Most “missing” payments are a weekend or holiday shift, or an SSI payment that already arrived at the end of the previous month.
- Check with your bank or Direct Express. Deposits post at different times of day; a payment not showing first thing in the morning is not a Social Security problem yet.
- Allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security — that is SSA’s own guidance on its payment calendar.
- Then call or sign in. Use your my Social Security account at ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1213. Social Security will never call you to demand a payment or ask for gift cards to release a benefit.

What day of the month does Social Security pay?

Will Social Security checks come early this month?

Why did I get two SSI payments in one month?
Because the next month’s 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, so that payment arrived on the last business day of this month. The second deposit is next month’s benefit, not extra money, and next month will show no SSI deposit.
Does the payment schedule change every year?
The four-group rule stays the same; the dates move because weekends and holidays move. SSA publishes a new calendar each year, and this page is updated from it.
Is there an extra or bonus Social Security payment in 2026?
No. SSA has not scheduled any extra, bonus, or stimulus payment for 2026. Any message promising one is a scam.
