Anatomy of a deposit slip

A deposit slip (or deposit ticket) tells the bank what to put into your account. Use this diagram to show students what goes where — the numbers match the labels.

Money Instructor Bank 1221 Main Street · Anywhere, US 10001 DEPOSIT TICKET Deposit Slip Date Account No. Cash — Currency $ Cash — Coin Checks — list each Subtotal Less Cash Received Total Deposit Sign here for cash received ⑆074894934⑆ 6793868122⑈ 0101 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
  1. 1Date — The day you make the deposit.
  2. 2Account number — The account the money goes into.
  3. 3Cash — The total of the bills (currency) and coins you are depositing.
  4. 4Checks — List each check separately by its amount — don’t combine them.
  5. 5Subtotal — Add the cash and all the checks together.
  6. 6Less cash received — Any money you take back in cash at the counter.
  7. 7Total deposit — Subtotal minus cash received — what actually goes into the account.
  8. 8Signature — Required only if you take cash back from the deposit.

Fill out a deposit slip in 5 steps

1

Write the date

Fill in today’s date and your account number at the top of the slip.

2

Enter your cash

Total the bills on the currency line and coins on the coin line.

3

List each check

Write every check on its own line by amount — one line per check.

4

Add the subtotal

Add the cash and all of the checks together for the subtotal.

5

Total your deposit

Subtract any cash you take back, write the total, and sign if you took cash.

A sample deposit

Say you have $80.00 in cash and two checks to deposit — one for $125.00 and one for $46.50 — and you want $20.00 back in cash. Here’s how the slip adds up:

Cash — Currency & Coin$80.00
Check 1$125.00
Check 2$46.50
Subtotal$251.50
Less Cash Received$20.00
Total Deposit$231.50

Cash plus both checks is the subtotal ($251.50). Subtract the $20.00 you take back, and $231.50 goes into the account. Because you took cash back, you also sign the slip.

How to use these printable deposit slips

Deposit slips let students practice making a bank deposit without a real account. Print a set and have students fill in the date, total their cash, list each check separately, and work out the total deposit — the same steps they’ll use at a real bank or ATM.

  • Model a deposit on a projector with the single slip, then have students complete their own.
  • Give each student a page of slips for repeated practice with different cash and check amounts.
  • Pair with the printable checks and a check register for a complete checking-account lesson.
  • Tie it to a real-world task — depositing a paycheck, birthday money, or a refund.
