Anatomy of a check

Every check has the same parts. Use this diagram to show students what goes where before they fill in a blank — the numbers match the labels.

  1. 1Check number — Identifies this check; the numbers run in order.
  2. 2Date — The day you write the check.
  3. 3Pay to the order of — The person or company you are paying.
  4. 4Amount in numbers — The dollar amount, written inside the box.
  5. 5Amount in words — The same amount spelled out, with cents as a fraction.
  6. 6Memo (For) — A note for what the check is for — optional.
  7. 7Signature — Your signature; a check is not valid without it.
  8. 8Routing & account numbers — Identify your bank and your account.

Write a check in 6 steps

1

Write the date

Fill in today’s date on the line in the top-right corner.

2

Add the payee

Write who you’re paying after “Pay to the order of.”

3

Enter the amount

Write the dollar amount in numbers inside the box (e.g. 24.50).

4

Write it in words

Spell out the amount, then the cents as a fraction — e.g. “Twenty-four and 50/100.”

5

Add a memo

Note what the check is for on the memo line (optional).

6

Sign the check

Sign your name on the signature line to authorize it.

How to use these printable checks

Blank checks let students practice writing checks without using a real checking account. Print a set and have students fill in the date, payee, amount in numbers and in words, memo line, and signature — the same skills they’ll use with a real check. Pair them with the check register for a complete checkbook lesson.

  • Model a check on a projector using the single blank check, then have students complete their own.
  • Give each student a page of blank checks for repeated practice with different amounts and payees.
  • Use the checkbook practice sheet to connect writing a check with recording it in a register.
  • Combine with a real-world scenario — paying a bill, rent, or a classroom “store” purchase.
