Saving for Freckles

“Saving for Freckles” is a short story for beginning readers that teaches the importance of saving money and using it wisely. Jill and David meet a puppy at a pet shop — but Freckles costs fifty dollars, so they head home to see whether they have saved enough. Estimated time: one 30–45 minute session.

Lesson sequence

Set the scene (5 min). Ask students whether they have ever wanted something that cost more money than they had. What could they do to get it?
Read the story (15 min). Read “Saving for Freckles” together, or have older students read it on their own. Jill and David find a puppy they love, but it costs fifty dollars — so they go home to check their savings.
Talk about the choice (8 min). Why did Jill and David not buy Freckles right away? What did they need to do first? How does saving help you reach a goal?
Comprehension worksheet (12 min). Students answer the printable questions about the story.
