For Teachers
How to use this lesson
The lesson opens with a short video on bank account basics, suitable for whole-class viewing. The lesson page also includes a full lesson plan with structured discussion questions and two classroom activities. An accompanying multiple-choice worksheet is available on the lesson page and requires Full Membership to access.
Activity 1 — Role-Playing: Small groups receive a life scenario (student saving for college, someone starting their first job, a family needing easy bill access) and decide which type of bank account fits best. Groups present and defend their choice.
Activity 2 — Bank Account Feature Comparison: Students use handouts or online resources to compare real bank accounts side by side — looking at fees, minimum balances, interest rates, and online banking features. Each student selects an account that fits their own needs and explains their reasoning.
Works best as an opener for a banking or personal finance unit — before lessons on check writing, saving, or earning interest. Also effective as a standalone lesson for adult education or life skills classes.
