Currency is the official money of a country, and its value against other currencies shifts constantly. This lesson explains what currency is, how exchange rates work and what moves them, and how digital currencies like Bitcoin differ from government-issued money.

Vocabulary

Currency
The official money of a country — its coins and paper notes — issued by a government and managed by its central bank.
Exchange rate
The rate at which one currency can be traded for another.
Foreign exchange (forex) market
The global market where currencies are traded and exchange rates are determined.
Appreciation
A rise in a currency’s value relative to others.
Depreciation
A fall in a currency’s value relative to others.
Digital currency
Money that exists only electronically, such as a cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin
A decentralized digital currency recorded on a blockchain, not backed by a government.

Lesson plan

Estimated time: one 45–60 minute class period.

Lesson sequence

  1. Warm-up (5 min). Students brainstorm types of money they know (cash, cards, checks, crypto). Introduce currency as a country’s official money.
  2. Watch the video (10 min). Play the lesson video. Ask students to note what an exchange rate is and what moves it.
  3. Currency & exchange rates (15 min). Explain how each country’s currency is managed by its central bank, read an exchange-rate quote, and discuss how forex supply and demand set rates and why a strong economy can raise a currency’s value.
  4. Digital currency (8 min). Contrast Bitcoin (decentralized, no government backing, market-driven value, volatile) with traditional currency.
  5. Quiz (10 min). Students complete the printable quiz; the answer key is included for teacher use.

Activity

  • Convert it. Using a currency converter, students convert a $100 purchase into three currencies and note how the amounts differ and why.
