What is the Federal Reserve?

Central bank

Monetary policy
Actions a central bank takes to influence the money supply and interest rates.
Federal funds rate
The benchmark interest rate the Fed targets, which ripples into consumer rates.
Inflation
A general rise in prices that lowers money’s purchasing power.
Economic growth
An increase in the goods and services an economy produces over time.

Lesson plan

Estimated time: one 30–45 minute class period (extend with the role play).

Lesson sequence

  1. Introduction (5 min). Ask if students have heard of the Federal Reserve and what they think it does; record responses.
  2. Watch the video (10 min). Play the lesson video. Ask students to note the key concepts (monetary policy, interest rates, inflation).
  3. What the Fed does (12 min). Cover the Fed’s main jobs: setting monetary policy, influencing interest rates via the federal funds rate, regulating banks, and working to keep prices stable and the economy growing.
  4. Quiz (10 min). Students complete the printable quiz; the answer key is included for teacher use.

Activity — role play

  • Who does what. Assign groups roles (Board of Governors, a regional Fed bank, a commercial bank) and have them act out how a rate decision flows through the system.
