Health Insurance and Payroll Deductions Generator
Generate randomized word problem worksheets on health insurance plan comparison and monthly premiums. Students compare plan options and costs based on coverage level, learning why benefits selection is one of the most important — and least understood — parts of starting a job.
What Students Learn
Learning objectives
- How employer-sponsored health insurance is structured and who pays for it
- What a premium is and how it appears as a deduction on every paycheck
- The difference between a deductible, co-pay, and out-of-pocket maximum
- How to calculate the employee’s share of a monthly insurance premium
- Why benefits are part of total compensation — and how to factor them into job decisions
For Teachers
How to use this generator
The generator produces randomized word problem worksheets built around comparing health insurance plan options. Each worksheet shows several plans with different monthly premiums based on coverage level — employee only, employee plus spouse, or full family coverage. Students answer questions comparing plan costs and identifying the best choice given different family situations. Customize the number of questions (1–10), set an average employee-only rate, choose single-line or box format, and optionally personalize with student names.
Use this generator later in a paychecks unit, after students understand gross pay and basic deductions. Health insurance is often the largest single deduction on a paycheck, yet most students have no idea what it covers or what it costs. Also a strong fit for a career readiness or adult life skills unit when discussing job offers and benefits packages.
