Learning objectives

  • How to read and complete a standard employee time card
  • How to calculate total hours worked across a full work week
  • How to compute gross pay from hours worked and an hourly wage
  • How overtime hours work and how they affect gross pay calculations
  • Why tracking hours accurately matters for employees and employers alike

How to use this generator

The generator produces a random time card covering a 7-day work period. Choose the Basic Worksheet for a quick random exercise, or use the Custom Worksheet to control exactly which fields students must calculate — Total Hours, Regular Hours, Overtime, Grand Total Hours, and Total Salary. You can also set specific regular and overtime salary rates, enter a custom employee name, and optionally add minutes for a harder exercise. Every time you access or refresh the page, a new worksheet is generated, so students can repeat the exercise with different numbers.

Use this generator at the start of a paychecks unit to establish the baseline: students need to understand where gross pay comes from before they can meaningfully interpret a pay stub. Pair with the Earnings Statement Worksheet to show what happens to that gross pay by the time it becomes take-home pay.
