What is Shrinkflation?
Shrinkflation is when a product gets smaller while the price stays the same — so you quietly get less for your money. This lesson teaches students to recognize shrinkflation on everyday items, understand why companies do it, and use unit pricing and label-reading to get real value.

Estimated time: one 30–45 minute class period.
Lesson sequence
- Introduction (5 min). Ask if students have noticed a favorite snack or product getting smaller. Name it: shrinkflation.
- Watch the video (12 min). Play the lesson video. Ask students to note how shrinkflation works and why companies do it.
- Discussion (12 min). Cover how shrinkflation differs from a straight price increase, why companies use it, and how it connects to inflation.
- Activity — unit pricing (8 min). Using labels, students compute and compare unit prices to find the better value, and practice spotting downsizing.
- Quiz (8 min). Students complete the printable quiz; the answer key is included for teacher use.
