Banking & Checking — A 5-Day Personal Finance Unit

A teacher-ready 5-day unit that guides students through bank accounts, check writing, debit cards and online banking, the Checking Account Simulation, and saving habits — using existing MoneyInstructor lessons and worksheets.

Grades: 7–12 Length: 5 days Class period: approximately 45 minutes

A complete week of banking and checking instruction

The unit moves from foundational concepts to applied practice. Days 1–3 introduce accounts, checks, and digital banking tools. Day 4 anchors the unit with the Checking Account Simulation — a real-world reconciliation exercise. Day 5 closes with saving habits and a short student plan.

Students learn what banks do and the difference between checking, savings, and money market accounts.

Day 4: the Checking Account Simulation

The Checking Account Simulation anchors Day 4 of the unit. Students record nine real transactions in a check register, reconcile the account against a bank statement, and apply everything they’ve learned about checks, debit cards, and online banking. A free sample is available for any teacher who wants to try the simulation in one class period.
