Budgeting & First Paycheck — A 5-Day Personal Finance Unit

A teacher-ready 5-day unit that takes students from budget basics through fixed and variable expenses, reading a pay stub, making real spending decisions with a first paycheck, and setting financial goals — using existing MoneyInstructor lessons and worksheets.

Grades: 9–12 Length: 5 days Class period: approximately 45 minutes

Works well for personal finance, life skills, career education, CTE, and adult education programs.

A complete week of budgeting and first paycheck instruction

The unit builds from foundational concepts to applied practice. Days 1–2 establish what a budget is and how expenses are categorized. Day 3 unpacks paychecks and pay stubs. Day 4 anchors the unit with First Paycheck, Real Choices — a real-world budgeting simulation. Day 5 closes with goal-setting and spending tracking.

Day 1

What a budget is and why it matters

Students learn what a budget is, why people create them, and how income and expenses are the two core components of any budget.

Day 2

Needs vs. wants + fixed and variable expenses

Day 3

What a paycheck is and how to read a pay stub

Students learn paycheck vocabulary — gross pay, deductions, net pay — and practice locating key lines on a real-format pay stub.
