A complete week of credit and borrowing instruction

The unit builds from foundational concepts to applied practice. Days 1–2 establish what credit is and how credit cards differ from debit cards. Day 3 covers credit scores and the habits that build credit responsibly. Day 4 anchors the unit conceptually with APR, interest, and the free Credit Card Minimum Payment Trap video lesson. Day 5 closes with reading a real credit card statement and writing a personal responsible-borrowing plan.

Day 1

What credit is and why it matters

Students define credit in their own words, identify everyday situations where credit is involved, and discuss practical trade-offs between using cash and using credit.

Day 2

Credit cards vs. debit cards

Students learn how a credit card transaction works at a basic level and build a side-by-side comparison of credit cards and debit cards — whose money is being spent, when, and what happens if it isn’t paid back.

Day 3

Credit scores and building credit

Students learn what a credit score is, the general factors that influence it, and the responsible habits that help build credit over time. Language is kept general — no issuer-specific claims.

Day 4

APR, interest, and the minimum payment trap

Students learn APR conceptually and watch the free Credit Card Minimum Payment Trap video lesson — understanding, at a conceptual level, why paying only the minimum costs much more over time.

Day 5

Reading a credit card statement and responsible borrowing

Students identify the key sections of a credit card statement — balance, minimum payment, due date, interest charges, fees — and write three rules of responsible borrowing they would follow as a new cardholder.

The Credit Card Minimum Payment Trap

Day 4 of the unit is anchored by The Credit Card Minimum Payment Trap — a free MoneyInstructor video lesson that introduces APR conceptually, explains how interest accumulates on an unpaid credit card balance, and shows why paying only the minimum payment costs much more over time than paying the full balance. The pacing guide treats this day at a conceptual level — there are no numeric APR or amortization worked examples for teachers to verify in class. Students leave Day 4 understanding the idea behind the math without the pressure of computing it themselves.

The Credit Card Minimum Payment Trap
