How to teach donating and charity
Giving is a financial-literacy topic as much as a character one — deciding to donate, choosing where, and understanding how a gift actually reaches someone in need all involve the same kind of thinking students use everywhere else in personal finance. The lessons below work best taught as a short sequence: what a charity is, why people give, how a real fundraiser works, and then the wider question of civic responsibility.
Start with what a charity actually is
Students often assume a charity and a business are opposites — one gives, one takes. Start by contrasting mission and profit motive: a charity exists to serve a cause, and any money it raises goes toward that mission rather than to owners or shareholders. Many legitimate charities still pay staff and have real operating costs, which is a useful corrective to the idea that “a good charity spends nothing on itself.”
Make fundraising real with the math behind it

Broaden the lens: civic responsibility and human rights

Common misconceptions to watch for
