- Dwelling coverage
- Pays to repair or rebuild the physical home after a covered loss.
- Personal property coverage
- Pays to replace belongings inside the home.
- Liability coverage
- Pays if someone is injured on your property or you damage others’ property.
- Exclusion
- A loss a policy specifically does not cover, such as floods in a standard policy.
- Deductible
- The amount you pay out of pocket before insurance pays on a claim.
- Claim
- A request to your insurer to pay for a covered loss.

Estimated time: one 30–45 minute class period.
Lesson sequence
- Introduction (8 min). Discuss what homeowners insurance is and why it’s relevant — for owners and for anyone who will rent or buy later.
- Watch the video (12 min). Play the lesson video. Ask students to note the main coverage types and the claims process.
- Discussion (12 min). Cover dwelling, personal property, and liability coverage; why lenders require it; tips for choosing a policy; common exclusions (e.g., floods); and how a claim works.
- Activity — choose a policy (10 min). Groups get a scenario (home value, location, risks) and pick the best policy, weighing coverage, deductibles, and exclusions, then present.
- Quiz (8 min). Students complete the printable quiz; the answer key is included for teacher use.
