Estimated time: one 30–45 minute class period.
Lesson sequence
- Introduction (8 min). Introduce the 401(k) as a top way people save for retirement, and tease the “free money” of an employer match.
- Watch the video (12 min). Play the lesson video. Ask students to note the tax benefit and how the match works.
- Discussion (10 min). Cover pre-tax contributions, the employer match, why starting early matters, and basics of limits and withdrawals.
- Activity (10 min). Students calculate a 401(k)’s growth over time with and without an employer match and discuss the difference compounding makes.
- Quiz (8 min). Students complete the printable quiz; the answer key is included for teacher use.
