Before you teach
The activity is free and lives inside Money Instructor Classroom at classroom.moneyinstructor.com/interactive-lessons — a separate, privacy-first app from this website. Students open it from a signed-in student account (a class code, a username, and a PIN you hand out — no email needed). Everything is pretend money for practice.
Set up your class before this lesson (about five minutes):
- Create a free class — a Bank-Only class is the simplest fit.
- Add your students — a first name, initials, or a nickname is all you need (no full legal names).
- Print sign-in slips — each student’s class code, username, and PIN.
- To project the demo — sign in as a student on the classroom computer and open the game so the whole class can watch you round up for the first price.
This is a choice-based, scored game: ten rounds across three escalating tiers — prices under $5 using only $1 bills, then prices under $10 that add $5 bills, then prices from $10–$19 that add $10 bills. One round deliberately uses an exact-dollar price ($5.00) to test whether students over-generalize “always add a dollar.” A score and a review of any missed rounds show at the end.

The Lesson
Lesson plan
Estimated time: a 20–30 minute session (the game itself is 5–10 minutes). Works as a whole lesson or a math-center rotation.
Lesson sequence
- Warm-up (3 min). Put this on the board: “A sandwich costs $6.35. You want to pay with whole dollar bills — no coins. What’s the fewest dollars you can hand over and still have enough?” Take a few answers, including any who say “$6” (not enough) before landing on $7.
- Model the strategy (5 min). Project the game and show the first price. Point out the key twist — school rounding rounds to the nearest dollar, but here you always round up, even if the price is just barely over a dollar (like $3.01 still rounding up to $4). Explain why: rounding to the nearest dollar could leave you short. Rounding up always leaves you with enough, and the cashier hands back the difference as change.
- Students play (10 min). Students open the game and work through all ten rounds on their own device or in pairs. Circulate and help. Remind them: find the next whole dollar at or above the price, then pick the matching group of bills.
- Watch the tiers build (built in). The game moves from $1 bills only, to a mix with $5 bills, to a mix with $10 bills as the prices grow — call this out as it happens. A score and a review of any missed rounds show at the end.
- Wrap-up (2–5 min). Bring the class together and use the discussion questions below. Ask a student to explain, in their own words, why you round up instead of to the nearest dollar.
Guided practice — the interactive game
The game is the guided practice: ten rounds across three escalating tiers. Each round shows a price and four bill-group options in ascending order; the student taps the smallest group that still covers the price. Immediate feedback explains why a pick was wrong — “not enough to pay” if they picked under, or “you can round up to less than that” if they over-paid — so students learn the boundary from both sides, not just whether they were right. Students can replay as often as they like, but note that the ten rounds are the same every time — a replay is for beating their own score and getting fluent on the missed rounds, not for new problems. When you want fresh practice, switch to the printable worksheet generators or to Make Change, which does draw new questions each time you play.
Assessment — check for understanding
Students have met the goal when each one can, without help: round a price up to the next whole dollar and pick the matching group of bills — and explain why rounding up (not to the nearest dollar) guarantees they always have enough. A quick paper exit ticket works well: “A magazine costs $4.15. What’s the fewest whole dollars you’d hand over?” (Answer: $5.)
Differentiation & extension
- Grades 1–2: stick to Tier 1 prices (under $5, $1 bills only) and model each round together before students try it solo.
- Grades 3–5: work the full range including $5 and $10 bills, and discuss the exact-dollar edge case explicitly — why doesn’t $5.00 round up to $6?
- Functional math, life skills & special education: this lesson was designed with these classrooms especially in mind. The “always round up, always have enough” rule is a genuinely useful, simplified real-world shortcut — it removes the need to count exact coins under time pressure at a register. Consider pairing it with real or printable bills so students can physically hand over the “next dollar up” amount.
