Learning objectives

  • What the W-2 form is and why employers send one to every employee at the end of the tax year
  • How to read a W-2 box by box — wages, federal income tax withheld, Social Security, and Medicare amounts
  • The difference between gross wages (total earned) and taxable wages (after pre-tax deductions)
  • How the W-2 connects to the annual tax return — reconciling what was withheld against what was owed
  • Why receiving a tax refund means too much was withheld, and owing taxes means too little was withheld

How to use this generator

This interactive generator creates customizable, printable W-2 reading exercises. Members can generate varied scenarios — different wage levels, withholding amounts, and deductions — so each class works with fresh data. Students practice interpreting each box and understanding what the numbers mean.

Pairs directly with the W-4 worksheet — the W-4 determines withholding when a job starts, and the W-2 reports the year-end result. Best used in high school personal finance or adult education tax literacy classes, ideally before or during tax season when the forms feel immediate and relevant.
