The Biggest Money Choice Most People Never Learn

Almost every student will pay into Social Security with their first paycheck — and one day face the one choice that sets their check for life: when to claim. This print-and-do lesson set uses the real claiming rules to show how starting at 62, full retirement age, or 70 changes the monthly benefit, the lifetime total, and the break-even age.

From “what is Social Security?” to “when should you claim?”

Social Security comes down to a few clear ideas. Students learn them in order, from the payroll tax that funds it to the break-even math behind the claiming decision.

1

Where the money comes from

The 6.2% FICA payroll tax on a paycheck funds the whole system — the same tax students meet in Understanding Your Paycheck.

2

Claim early, on time, or late

Apply the real claiming factors — 70% at 62, 100% at full retirement age, 124% at 70 — to find the monthly check at each age.

3

Lifetime totals & the break-even

More small checks or fewer big ones? Students compute lifetime totals and find the break-even age where waiting starts to pay off.

Frequently asked questions

What grades is this for?
Grades 9–12. Three difficulty levels are built into the worksheets — applying the claiming factors to find the monthly benefit (9–10), computing lifetime totals (10–11), and the break-even age plus the “claiming trap” comparison (11–12) — so one packet reaches a whole range of readiness.
Are the numbers real?
The claiming math is real — it uses the Social Security Administration’s actual rules (early reduction of 5/9 of 1% per month for the first 36 months then 5/12 of 1% per month; delayed credits of 2/3 of 1% per month to age 70), the same ones behind Money Instructor’s online claiming-age calculator. To keep the classroom math clean, the examples leave out cost-of-living increases, taxes on benefits, spousal and survivor rules, and the exact filing month. Real benefits depend on a person’s full earnings record and current law. This is an educational resource, not personal retirement, tax, or financial advice.
What will students be able to do?
Explain what Social Security is and how the payroll tax funds it; find a person’s full retirement age from their birth year; apply the claiming factors to find the monthly check at 62, full retirement age, and 70; compute lifetime totals for claiming early vs. late; and find the break-even age — while understanding there is no single “best” age to claim.
Do students need computers?
No. The whole packet is print-and-do. The optional Social Security Calculator spreadsheet is a bonus for classrooms that want a digital self-check, and the free online claiming-age calculator is a nice companion.
What’s the difference between the free sample and the full packet?
The free sample includes the How Social Security Works overview, the full labeled Anatomy of a Social Security Statement page, and a Level 1 worksheet — enough to run a lesson. The full packet adds all three worksheet levels, lifetime totals and the break-even age, reflection and take-home pages, the full answer key, the certificate, the teacher guide, and the Social Security Calculator spreadsheet.
How do I get each one?
The free sample is included with a free Money Instructor account. The full packet and the calculator are included with paid Money Instructor membership.
