Tax skills students build

Filing a federal income tax return is one of the most common adult money tasks, and Form 1040 is the return nearly everyone uses. This generator builds a simple return — wages, a little interest, the standard deduction, and the tax — so students learn the shape of a 1040 without the complexity of schedules and credits. Pair it with the W-2 and W-4 generators and the taxes lessons and worksheets for a complete introduction to income taxes.

  • Complete a real Form 1040 simple return from start to finish

  • Subtract the standard deduction ($15,750 single, $31,500 married filing jointly, $23,625 head of household) to get taxable income
  • Figure the tax from the current federal tax brackets
  • Compare the tax to the tax withheld to find a refund or amount owed

Form 1040 Worksheet FAQ

Do I need a membership to use this generator?

Yes — the generator is a full Money Instructor membership feature (the paid plan, not a free account). Full members can make and print unlimited Form 1040 worksheets with answer keys. The page itself is free to read.

What does each worksheet include?

A taxpayer information card (name, filing status, wages, interest, and tax withheld) and a blank Form 1040 covering the simple-return lines — total income, AGI, standard deduction, taxable income, tax, payments, and the refund or amount owed — plus an optional answer key that completes it and shows the tax math.

Does it use current tax figures?

Yes. It uses the verified 2025 standard deduction ($15,750 single, $31,500 married filing jointly, $23,625 head of household) and the 2025 federal income tax brackets. The worksheet figures the tax straight from the brackets so the math is exact; a note explains that real returns under $100,000 use the IRS Tax Table.

Why Form 1040 and not the 1040EZ?

The IRS discontinued Form 1040EZ after tax year 2017 and replaced it with the redesigned Form 1040, so this generator teaches the current form. The simple return here covers the same wages-and-interest situation the old 1040EZ did.

Can I choose the filing status?

Yes. Pick Single, Married filing jointly, or Head of household — or leave it on Random so each worksheet varies. The standard deduction and tax brackets adjust to match.

Can I personalize it with my students’ names?

Yes. Paste your class list into the Student names box and each scenario uses one of those names; leave it blank for built-in names. Set Number of worksheets up to 5 to make a different one per student.
