Six ways to use it

Real-world budgeting

Students build a believable college budget — rent, tuition, food, books, transportation — not abstract drill problems.

Income vs. expenses

Total five income sources and eleven expenses, then compare them: does this student’s budget balance?

Net income

Calculate net income (income − expenses) and interpret a surplus or a shortfall — the heart of personal budgeting.

Sorting & categorizing

Match each estimate to the correct income or expense category — reading and organizing financial information.

Discussion & reasoning

Every worksheet asks where to save extra money or cut expenses — great for class discussion and writing.

Sub plans & homeschool

A no-prep, self-checking worksheet with an answer key — a new budget every time.

Money skills students build

Building a monthly budget is one of the most useful money skills a student can practice before college. Students total a college student’s income and expenses, find the net income, and decide what to do with a surplus or a shortfall. Pair this with the budgeting lessons, the making a budget generator, and the paying bills generator for a complete budgeting unit.

  • Build a realistic monthly budget with income and expense categories
  • Total income and total expenses separately
  • Calculate net income (income − expenses)
  • Interpret a budget surplus or shortfall
  • Sort financial information into the right categories

College Budget Worksheet FAQ

Do I need a membership to use this generator?

Yes — the generator is a full Money Instructor membership feature (the paid plan, not a free account). Full members can make and print unlimited worksheets with answer keys. The page itself is free to read.

How does the worksheet work?

Each worksheet gives students a blank monthly budget for a college student plus a shuffled list of dollar estimates — one for each income and expense category. Students place each estimate in the right row, total the income and the expenses, and calculate the net income (income − expenses).

Does the budget balance?

Sometimes income is greater than expenses (a surplus) and sometimes expenses are greater (a shortfall) — it varies each time. That is the point: students decide where to save a surplus or cut a shortfall, and the answer key shows which way the budget came out.

Can I personalize it?

Yes. Add your students’ names (one per line) and each worksheet is written for a named student. Set Number of worksheets up to 5 for different versions.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Keep Include answer key on and the tool prints the completed budget with every amount, the income and expense subtotals, the net income, and whether income exceeded expenses.
