A house is the most expensive thing most people ever buy, so they borrow to pay for it with a mortgage loan. To work out how big a mortgage you need, you start with the house price, subtract the down payment (often 20%) to get the amount to be financed, add up the closing costs, and total it all into the mortgage loan.
