Six ways to use it

Read a real income statement

Students see how a profit and loss statement is laid out — revenue, cost of goods sold, expenses, and the bottom line — and how each subtotal is built.

Calculate the bottom line

Compute gross profit, operating income, earnings before taxes, and net earnings, reinforcing ordered, multi-step subtraction and addition.

Business-math percentages

Optional ratio questions cover gross, operating, and net margin and the tax rate — the percentages investors and owners actually use.

Compare over time

Three months side by side let students measure dollar and percentage change from one month to the next.

Accounting & entrepreneurship units

A no-prep worksheet for an accounting, business, personal-finance, or investor-education class learning how a company measures profit.

Differentiate by difficulty

Turn ratio questions on for advanced students, or set questions to 0 for a pure fill-in-the-statement exercise.

Money skills students build

The profit and loss statement — also called the income statement — is how every business measures whether it made money. Students learn to read one, calculate the key subtotals from the bottom up, and analyze it with dollar changes, percentage changes, and margin ratios. Pair this with the financial ratio analysis and income statement lessons for a full accounting unit.

  • Read a profit and loss (income) statement and identify each line item
  • Calculate gross profit, operating income, earnings before taxes, and net earnings
  • Find the dollar change and percentage change in any item month to month
  • Calculate gross, operating, and net margin and the tax rate
  • Understand how revenue, expenses, and profit fit together on one statement

Profit and Loss Statement Worksheet FAQ

Do I need a membership to use this generator?

Yes — the generator is a full Money Instructor membership feature (the paid plan, not a free account). Full members can make and print unlimited worksheets with answer keys. The page itself is free to read.

What is a profit and loss statement?

A profit and loss statement (P&L), also called an income statement, shows a business’s revenue, expenses, and profit over a period of time. It starts with revenue and subtracts costs step by step down to net earnings — the bottom line.

What does the student calculate?

The statement gives the line items (revenue, cost of goods sold, expenses, taxes); students calculate the five subtotals — gross profit, operating expenses, operating income, earnings before taxes, and net earnings — for each of the three months, then answer the questions.

What kinds of questions can I include?

Four types: identification (look up a value), dollar change and percentage change month to month, and ratio questions (gross, operating, and net margin and the tax rate). Turn each on or off, and choose 0–12 questions.

What grade level is it for?

It works best for grades 7 and up, including high-school business and accounting, personal finance, and adult or investor education.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Keep Include answer key on and the tool prints the completed statement (all subtotals filled in) plus the answer to every question.
