Money skills students build

Calculating a tip is one of the most common ways people use percents in daily life. Students practice taking a percent of an amount and adding it to a bill — reinforcing percent, multiplication, and addition. Pair this with the shopping list generator and money word problems for a complete consumer-math unit.

Restaurant Tipping Worksheet FAQ

Do I need a membership to use this generator?

Yes — the generator is a full Money Instructor membership feature (the paid plan, not a free account). Full members can make and print unlimited worksheets with answer keys. The page itself is free to read.

Is the tip calculated on the pre-tax or after-tax amount?

On the pre-tax amount. That is the standard way to tip — the worksheet figures each tip as a percent of the pre-tax bill, then adds it to the after-tax total to get the amount paid.

Why is the after-tax bill higher than the pre-tax bill?

A 7% sales tax is added to the pre-tax bill to get the after-tax amount. Students don’t calculate the tax — it’s given — so the focus stays on figuring the tip and the total paid.

Can I choose the tip percentage?

Yes. Pick 15%, 20%, a random mix of 15% or 20%, any whole percent from 15–20%, or set your own custom percentage.

Can beginners just calculate the total?

Yes — turn on Pre-fill the Tip $ column and the tip is filled in, so students only add it to the after-tax bill to find the total paid.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Keep Include answer key on and the tool prints the worked tip and total for every bill, so grading takes seconds. Set Number of worksheets up to 5 for different versions.
