- Set the options. Choose how many questions and how big the investments are ($10 to $10,000).
- Generate. Press Generate worksheet — the tool builds a table of investments showing the money received and the money invested.
- Students solve. They find the gain or loss (money received − money invested) and the ROI % ((gain or loss) ÷ money invested × 100).

In the Classroom
Six ways to use it
Intro to investing
A concrete first look at how investors measure a gain or loss on the money they put in.
Percent of an amount
ROI is applied percent math — great practice taking a percent of a dollar amount.
Gains and losses
Returns can be negative, so students practice working with positive and negative numbers.
Differentiate the math
Pre-fill the gain/loss column so students only find the ROI %, or leave it blank for full practice.
Personal finance units
Drop into an investing, saving, or stock-market unit as a warm-up or exit ticket.
Sub plans & homeschool
A self-checking, no-prep worksheet with an answer key for instant grading.
What It Teaches
Money skills students build
Return on investment is how investors compare opportunities and measure whether the money they put in earned a gain or took a loss. Students practice the ROI formula — reinforcing percent, division, and signed numbers. Pair this with the restaurant tipping generator and money word problems for more real-world percent practice.
- Calculate a gain or loss (money received − money invested)
- Find the return on investment as a percent: (gain or loss) ÷ money invested × 100
- Work with negative returns — a loss is a negative ROI
- Take a percent of a dollar amount and read it as a rate of return
- Understand how investors compare a gain against what they put in

Return on Investment Worksheet FAQ
Do I need a membership to use this generator?
Yes — the generator is a full Money Instructor membership feature (the paid plan, not a free account). Full members can make and print unlimited worksheets with answer keys. The page itself is free to read.
What is return on investment (ROI)?
ROI measures how much an investment gained or lost as a percent of what was invested. The formula is (money received − money invested) ÷ money invested × 100.
Does it include losses?
Yes. Returns can be negative — when the money received is less than the money invested, the gain/loss and the ROI % are negative. Students practice both gains and losses.
Can I change the investment size?
Yes. Choose investments of $10, $100, $1,000, or $10,000 so the worksheet fits your students.
Can students just calculate the ROI %?
Yes — turn on Pre-fill the Gain/Loss column and the gain or loss is filled in, so students only compute the ROI percent.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Keep Include answer key on and the tool prints the gain/loss and ROI % for every row. Set Number of worksheets up to 5 for different versions.
