Risk and Return Worksheet Generator

Make risk-and-return worksheets in seconds. Each one gives students the same money in two investments: a safe one with a small, steady return, and a risky one whose return varies — and can be a loss. For every possible return, students find the gain or loss (Money to Invest × Return) and the total, then decide which investment they would choose and why. Print with a built-in answer key. Included with your full Money Instructor membership.

Build your risk and return worksheet

Make a worksheet in four steps

  1. Choose the returns. Set how many risky return scenarios (4 to 12) and how much money is invested.
  2. Set the difficulty. Pre-fill the Gain/Loss column so students only calculate the Total, or leave it for full practice.
  3. Generate. Press Generate worksheet — the tool builds a safe example plus a fresh table of risky returns.
  4. Print or grade. Keep Include answer key on to print the worked solutions, or press ↻ New version for a fresh set.

Six ways to use it

Investing fundamentals

Students see the core trade-off: bigger possible returns come with bigger risk — including the risk of losing money.

Gains and losses

Work with positive and negative returns, so students learn that an investment can go down as well as up.

Percent of an amount

Calculate a return as a percent of the money invested — real, purposeful percent practice.

Comparing choices

Weigh a safe, steady return against a risky one and justify a decision — financial reasoning, not just math.

Money & investing vocabulary

Reinforce return, gain, loss, principal, and total in a realistic investing context.

Sub plans & homeschool

A no-prep, self-checking worksheet with an answer key — a new set every time.

Money skills students build

Risk and return is the first idea every investor needs: returns vary, bigger rewards carry bigger risk, and you can lose money. Students calculate the gain or loss and total for a range of returns, then weigh a safe choice against a risky one. Pair this with the investing lessons, the return on investment generator, and the compound interest generator for a full investing unit.

  • Calculate a return as a percent of the money invested
  • Find the gain or loss and the total for an investment
  • Work with negative returns (losses), not just gains
  • Compare a safe investment to a risky one
  • Build real-world investing judgment and money sense

Risk and Return Worksheet FAQ

Do I need a membership to use this generator?

Yes — the generator is a full Money Instructor membership feature (the paid plan, not a free account). Full members can make and print unlimited worksheets with answer keys. The page itself is free to read.

How does the worksheet work?

Each worksheet offers students the same money in two investments. A safe investment with a small, fixed return is shown worked out as an example. Then students complete a risky investment table: for each possible return, they find the gain or loss (Money to Invest × Return) and the total.

Does it include losses?

Yes. The risky returns include negative values, so students practice calculating a loss and see that an investment can go down as well as up — the heart of risk and return.

Can I control the difficulty?

Yes. Choose the number of return scenarios, the amount invested ($100 to $5,000), and whether to pre-fill the Gain/Loss column so students only calculate the total.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Keep Include answer key on and the tool prints the gain or loss and total for every return. Set Number of worksheets up to 5 for different versions.
